David, it occurs to me that maybe you may not have seen the Event Indices Project:
http://online.thomsonreuters.com/newsscopereports/update/reuters_final2.pdf

This reflects the kind of analysis that has been traditionally done over the text of financial news, but has been applied to the more precise data that comes from NewsScope.

Hans,
I had not seen the Reuters event indices document - thanks.
That was the sort of stuff I had in mind
After all, it is an SMS format of sorts, so it might have something in common with Stock Market ticker tape monitoring, which has been a specialized area of pattern matching for some years.

I had in mind Ian Keonig's "Elementizing" as presented in the Third Event Processing Workshop:
Invited Talk: Event Processing as a Core Capability of Your Content Distribution Fabric - Ian Koenig, Chief Architect, Thomson Financial

I wrote a blog article on this topic back in December, BI on Content Feeds, a.k.a. Continuous (Twitter) Transformation,

Richard Brown of Thomson Reuters spoke about this stuff at the Gartner summit immediately preceding the EPTS meeting back in September. For what it's worth, I wrote about it in a blog article, Event Processing Meets Text: Reuters at Gartner, http://www.intelligententerprise.com/blog/archives/2008/09/event_processin_1.html .
